At the end of December 2018 we implemented a new toddler program which will be focusing on the needs of our youngest group, from ages 18 months to 30 months. In this group of 15 children there is a ratio of one teacher to 5 children consisting of one RECE teacher and 2 Assistants.
At this age many of the children are still dependent on the teachers in the room, and require assistance in all areas of care including diapering, toileting, dressing, and eating. As per Licensing requirements, a change table in the room, allows staff to do diaper changes at scheduled times during the day as well as at other times as needed. Scheduling throughout the day is developed to suit the needs of this age group with an earlier lunch time and nap time daily. Everything is recorded on individual record sheets for each child, which also includes what each child ate, and general comments about the day. This is made available for parents daily.
The Toddler staff plan a weekly program based on the children’s interests and needs. The program is planned through daily observations of the children in all areas. Learning opportunities that support children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development are provided daily, both inside and outside the classroom during outdoor play. Particularly with this age group everything is a learning experience, and the staff provide interesting activities allowing the children to explore, and learn and develop self help skills.
The ELECT-Early Learning for Every Child Today document is used as a tool to support staff in identifying skill development across all developmental domains. Staff make daily observations of all children, thus planning activities and experiences to support skill development. Observations are recorded in individual portfolios for parents to view at any time.
Learning Opportunities provided:
Dramatic Play, Sensory Exploration (age appropriate), Block Play, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Creative Arts, Music, Science and Language & Literacy. Through these fun activities each child is learning and exploring at his or her own pace, and gaining independence, self esteem as they develop self help skills under the care and guidance of our loving and qualified staff.
